Thanks for your suggestion but bumblebee was not installed. However,
after switching the driver to the nvidia-update Branch and the Destkop-
Manager from GNOME to Unity, the problem vanished. So this might as well
be a GNOME problem, thus i'm marking it as invalid.

1.) Do you happen to have bumblebee installed ?
Try to remove bumblebee with purge option.
sudo apt-get remove --purge bumblebee*
If it is not install check in folder /etc/modprobe.d for file bumblebee.conf.
If exists delete it (contains blacklist option for nvidia)
rm -f /etc/modprobe.d/bumbleb
Actually i tried both ways. Switched via driver manager from Nouveau to Nvidia
331.38 (proprietary, tested) and since this did not work i tried sudo apt-get
install nvidia-331
Both lead to the same behaviour described above. I'm stuck at the loading
screen and no login screen ever shows up

how did you switch to the blob? The only supported way is via the driver
manager which then configures the system correctly
