update of fglrx fixed it.

David Maza, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

Xorg.log attached, just in case.
Now it goes to the low-graphics mode warning screen but I can actually
exit to the console at this stage whereas before I coudn't.
I'm not sure if my graphics card is officially supported since it's not
on the list here:

Thanks. Those files show that you are using the proprietary fglrx
drivers, as you stated in your last post. I can't see why it's failing,
but there's not much we can do about fglrx anyway. Do you have a dmesg
from a boot into low graphics mode when using the open-source radeon
driver?

I've never been able to get to the Console once I get the error message
that Ubuntu is starting in low graphics mode. If I opt to "Run in low
graphics mode for just one session" the display freezes. The same
happens if I opt to "Exit to console login" or if I press Ctrl + Alt +
F1 or Ctrl + Alt + B
Thanks. Can you also please attach a copy of your dmesg file from a
boot into low graphics mode?

Also when I installed each driver, I either uninstalled or purged all
other ones before doing so.
e.g.
apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
