Forgot to mention, my system is an older i7-870 (no integrated graphics)
with a GeForce GTX 650 Ti using nvidia 331.113 driver. Ubuntu 14.04 and
3.13.0-43-lowlatency kernel.

I have the same problem on my work PC. Any time my monitor is put to
sleep for inactivity, the video signal never returns within X. After the
inactivity, I turn the monitor back on after it has shut off due to no
