I've the same bug since I updated to Ubuntu 11.10 that almost never detects my soundcard.

When I click on a video file or open it from Totem, the playback doesn't start at all or stops very soon and the following error message is shown (most of the times): "Failed to write data to the esound daemon". After closing the error message, playback still doesn't work. I guess it would be good to have playback working without a soundcard too.
