I ve got the very same situation. What works in my case was simply to give it
a second chance:
sudo apt-get -f install
and taboomtsss it is OK.
Still it is nothing more than a workaround, and bug exists.

1) The driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-343.36.run
2) cuda_6.5.19_linux_64.run (skipping the driver)

with CUDA yet.
Installed latest 14.04 update (incl kernel) and now CUDA no longer works.

More on CUDA/nvidia: installed 14.04 21 July. Driver then was 331.28 according
to my notes
at the time.
CUDA continued to work through at least 5 kernel updates since then.

Same issue after rebooting this morning; yesterday I installed the
latest update on nVidia and CUDA drivers, they are maybe the cause. I
had to fall back to legacy drivers (304)
