This seems to be related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/akonadi/+bug/1445383 akonadi needs mariadb (not newer mySql) to start up. Other things might be involved too. Since akonadi gets used by address book, the notes, kmail, PIM, etc. any problem there will bleed over.

I am having the same problem. It appears that the file: $HOME/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf is not set up properly. I have been using 15.04 since Beta 1 and this only started happening in the RC right before release. The first error (about TIMESTAMP) could be resolved by adding
