The Xmir workaround is an ugly hack (it leaves stale pixels on screen
between windows). Please don't assume that feature will stay. Better off
using gimp --no-splash

Confirmed (on wily too). Flatten mode is broken, but more weird is that
this bug only occurs in Unity8 (not in the Mir demo servers)...
As a workaround, you can use: gimp --no-splash
And then for the best experience go: Windows > Single-Window Mode
** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
OK, it appears to be purely a Unity8/QtMir bug. Unity8 does not allow
gaps (splash screens) in the lifecycle of a connection's surface:
Connect
Create splash window
Destroy splash window
Create app window (still using the original connection)
This succeeds from the client's perspective (Xmir)
This is probably closely related to bug 1497085.

Title:
Gimp fails to start w/ Xmir running in '-rootless -flatten' mode
@kevin,
I'd rather go with a workaround in xmir. Otherwise, I would have to
modify the .desktop files inside the chroot to add any special exec
options passed to the application and that could be a headache.

@chris - do you wanna test the workaround? (assuming it lands pretty soon in
overlay) and then mark this as fixed?
or go with the --no-splash

I've added a workaround to Xmir to deal with this bug...

Not sure if we'll keep that though, because the simpler workaround is also
nicer:
gimp --no-splash

That's odd. I've been testing gimp a lot. Although testing on wily. And
it works fine.
Still, -flatten mode should be considered just a workaround. The real
solution involves fixing bug 1497085 instead.
