Here are the "soundcards" of two diffent machines with the same problem: 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) It is just a guess that the volume control might by applied at "buffer push" time, instead of "buffer pull" - which would explain the lag of approx. buffer size. Gnome main volume control works as expected.
