On Ubuntu 20.04 I experience similar issue as diagnosed by @prayerholmes . Selecting on the pop-up headset breaks the audio (but the microphone works!). After changing on settings->audio the input from `headset microphone - built-in audio` to `Internal microphone - built-in audio` and then back to

Update: I find out that in PulseAudio Panel the settings of input device should be choose as 'Internal Microphone' rather than 'Headset Microphone' or 'Microphone', and the speakers of my headset can work properly. My laptop's 1 jack hole connection and headset can work properly on Windows,
