I don't get any warning in the console when I open the thread.
Also, it seems it does not always happen the first time I open a thread (but
always the next few times I try).
I am using an IMAP account. (And I could also reproduce on another
computer with another IMAP account.)

Thank you for your bug report, I can't confirm the issue on a standard
imap folder clicking on a discussion, the last message is opened
correctly and the first one only one. Do you get any warning on the
console if your start thunderbird there?
Could you give some details on the type of account
