Nothing in regular Ubuntu calls 'xrandr --brightness' that I know of. Hence I recommend uninstalling 'brightness-controller' because it's the most suspicious package right now. Also I would expect 'GNOME' to avoid the problem more than 'GNOME on Xorg' because 'GNOME' has no Xorg server and no

Thanks for the bug report. It sounds like Xorg's (fake) brightness setting is being applied repeatedly. I would generally recommend avoiding that feature because it works by degrading color quality (tweaking the gamma ramps / color profile). I recommend using your monitor's brightness setting
