The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. When I record with gnome sound recorder, I can see the microphone volume bar move while I talk, but if I have the format set to .ogg, I hear nothing upon playback. If I change the format to any of the other 3 (.flac, .wav, or .spx), then I can play it back and hear the audio fine.
