If this is reproducible with a supported release, it will help immensely if you 
filed a new report with it by running the following from a terminal:

Title:
  CANON MP990 could'nt be recognized

Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  While using the standartpackage sane-utils, the deployed sane-lib
  (more precise the pixma-backend) is unable to detect/handle the MP990.
  After building the sane-lib from the git source, all works fine.
