I have the same issue in 12.04 too.
apport-collect -p xorg-server 701772
is not giving me any output.
As of now my original workaround work like magic
xrandr --newmode "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x900_60.00
xrandr --ou
I don't have latest distro to test this now, I can reopen the bug if I
observe the issue when I reinstall the OS in sometime.

Riyaz, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
