I'm using Ubuntu font family in Debian Sid (Xfce) and I still get this bug when using VLC (that uses Qt). I'm not a developer, nor a programmer, but after reading the whole report and found where the bug lies, I've managed to fix it copying the method used for the Delicious font in conf.avail/80
