Yesterday I tried logging into Gnome just to check and it worked. I
could also log into the guest session.
Today, it seems the problem is solved. The only trick that worked for me
was installing unity-tweak and running 'unity-tweak-tool --reset unity'.
It has to be run from an X session, as from t

I'm having a similar problem in Trusty, but Gnome has been saving me for
now as it's the only option that works at login. After logging into
Unity all I get is the wallpaper and cursor.
It started while running 14.10 and the machine simply shut down while I
