One clarification: Scrolling in all applications including geany is jerky at best but it has never been smooth in Ubuntu. However, only in gedit it is slow enough to cause freezes. Maybe gedit is just a tad slower in general so the general graphics performance issues becomes more obvious. -- You

I can confirm this bug on 11.10, nvidia quadro NVS 140M, nvidia driver 280.13. Scrolling any file maxes out 1 CPU and makes the editor freeze, rendering gedit unusable. Other editors like geany are not affected. Sorry, I can't report on the situation with proprietary drivers disabled; I'm happy I
