Open a duplicate for very simple reasons:
a) because a launchpad bug report is always limited to a single packet,
while this bug addresses two of them, lightdm and the desktop. lightdm
for making the wrong decision, desktop for poor implementation.
b) it has not been fixed so far, so I considered
thank you for your bug report, you already opened bug #884986 though,
which got marked as a duplicate of a bug which states that
.pam_environment will be used instead, why opening a duplicate?
