You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Ubuntu 11.10 lightdm was installed and working correctly; gdm was
then installed and also worked correctly.

When gdm was removed, lightdm no longer started on boot, but could be
started by typing "sudo start lightdm; exit" at the command prompt.

This was fixed by editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager and changing
its contents from "lightdm" to "/usr/sbin/lightdm".

It appears that the installation/uninstallation of gdm does not restore
this file correctly.
