Strange indeed
I upgraded Ubuntu 10.10, Peppermint and Moon this morning and all went well

I installed from the Firefox "Help" site.
When I typed "About" Firefox advised that a new version was available. I
downloaded the .tar.gz file, unpacked it but after extraction,the
original Ver 3 showed up. Only Peppermint upgraded to 9

Could you detail the steps you followed to install Firefox 9?
You may have installed from a .tar.gz, the Firefox site makes 9.0.1
available in that format for Linux. However, .tar.gz packages are not
handled by Ub
