The same thing happened to me right now. Any idea how to fix it?
Reinstalling AppArmor, executing dpkg --configure -a, purge cups and
install it again, nothing works. :/

Title:
  start: Job failed to start

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I had a system backup from 11.15.2011 which I had to restore.
  After that i ran apt update/ugrade some of the cups dependencies failed to
install since the cups startup failed.
  Basically the log was like

  Setting up cups (1.5.0-8ubuntu6) ...
  start: Job failed to start
  invoke-rc.d: initscript cups, action "start" failed.
  dpkg: error processing cups (--configure):
   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
  dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cups-driver-gutenprint:
   cups-driver-gutenprint depends on cups (>= 1.3.0); however:
    Package cups is not configured yet.
  dpkg: error processing cups-driver-gutenprint (--configure):
   dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

  In syslog I have
  init: cups pre-start process (6000) terminated with status 1
  Whenever I try to startup cups.
  I think it happened when upgrading 1.5.0-8ubuntu4 -> 1.5.0-8ubuntu6
