Title:
Xorg freeze on HD 3000 Graphics i915

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have been having this problem ever since I installed Ubuntu on this
computer. There is no discrete graphics card, the computer is on the Intel
i3-2105, which uses HD 3000 Graphics, using the i915 module.
I can easily reproduce this problem by opening any application that requires
OpenGL. Some examples include common games such as 0AD and SpringRTS, as well
as running WebGL demos on Firefox.
I attempted to fix this problem by going to xorg-edgers, but this did not fix
my problem.
This problem is not isolated to Ubuntu only as it affects Fedora 16 as well,
so it is probably upstream.
This problem affects both Unity, Gnome-Shell, and DE's with no compositing
involved.

Symptoms are that the screen flashes black for about 2 seconds, goes
back to desktop but unresponsive for 2 seconds, goes back to black
screen for 2 seconds, goes to desktop for 2 seconds, goes back to
black screen, and then finally goes to the desktop but the window
manager, the application with the GL, gnome-shell, and any other
x-server related applications die. All other applications work and are
fully responsive, but I usually reboot at this point because the DE
cannot be restarted by simply logging off and back on.
