sudo /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 6 works OK (except that it requires sudo) --get-brightness also works OK --get-max-brightness reports 7. there has been simiar problems throughout several Ubuntu releases on this machine. -- You received this bug

Unfortunately I don't even know how to run either, so I'd need more detailed instructions for testing. However, the slider problem seems to have vanished, after installing what Update Manager offered yesterday. The function keys for setting the brightness still do not work, i.e. behave the way
