In the same time, if one establishes vpn connection - network manager applet
icon becomes visible

an addition to my previous comment - the icon for mobile broadband connection
is not shown at notfication area appet,
but is shown at indicator applet complete.

I have the same problem. I run xubuntu 12.04 upgraded from 10.04.
I found that the icon only where missing at my own (and only) account.
But if I created a new account the icons showed corrrectly. Therefore I
suspected that the problem was related to the user settings, but i don't
know what file.
Very annoying to me too (Ubuntu on i3wm).

OK. I have upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 (and maybe from 11.04 before
that) and I have changed my desktop a few times inbetween Unity - KDE - Unity
- Xface. I haven't done any magic. I have used sudo tasksel. The reason for
that was because I had issues with all of these desktops,
Confirming, I was able to reproduce the issue with a straight XFCE
session, by removing the indicator widget from the panel and replacing
it with a notification area.
In this case, only for the mobile broadband icon, somehow the icon
doesn't show up (though the icon composited on top of it for
