I have had same issue on my Dell XPS L521X on Linux Mint 18 x64.
This solve my problem.

Add a line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :
options snd-hda-intel model=auto probe_mask=1

Same problem on ubuntu 12.10 amd64. Both in (ubuntu 12.04-provided)
kernel 3.2.0 and kernel 3.5.0.
So it looks it is not the kernel after all...

Same problem here, didn't test powering with headphones either.
Laptop is Acer Aspire 7720G, used to work in linux mint 13 before last
update.
$ uname -a
Linux claw 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:41:14 UTC 2012 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux
lspci -v:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corpor
Is this bug due Linux Kernel? Maybe I am wrong, but I think Yes!

I solved problem by doing:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/kernel-i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
or
sudo apt-get install linux
I upgraded Linux Kernel.

I found myself a solution: run
alsamixer
in the terminal
there you can mute (press m ) the headphone.
This is not a solution for a long time, but I think you cand handle the problem
for a while.
