What about global root disk controller setting ?
storage level setting overwrite the global level setting and global level
setting has no impact that is reason the initial logic

Yes ,ide won't support for vmware that is the reason test case failed with
unsupported storage error.

if you run the test on vmware ,you need to use iscsi pro
