Hi all,
I setup a gateway that sends messages back and forth. Let me use it for a while
to so I can tweak it if needed. It also needs to prove how stable this is.
This is what it does:
Freenode #cloudstack <<===>> Slack #general
So, item 3 from the list done and this will help me doing item 2 a
I think we are all in agreement here, so let's move on with:
-consolidate #cloudstack and #cloudstack-dev (who can do that ? )
-let's try to be more present on IRC (that's for everyone )
-let's try to setup some slack/IRC proxy so that folks who are using Slack
right now can make the IRC folks be
John,
All we did was quickly setup as POC to test it out with some folks. I never
said it should replace anything in its current state.

Remi,
The fact that a chat channel is limited to those with an @apache.org account
and requires knowing who to ask for invitation runs counter the Apache Way.
Chat channels should be open and discoverable by all.
I am with Nux, -1 for anything like Hipchat, Slack, etc. If some folks prefer

Erik,
I don’t think measuring current #cloudstaack-dev activity is relevant. A
number of developers have been experimenting with Slack which would naturally
decrease activity. The question for the community is which means should we all
use going forward, and deprecate the other.
For me, wile

Email and MLs are going to stay, so for IMs and chatting we can use one or more
of such tools. I like Slack, the searchable history and whatnot, but I think
realtime communication in general may face the same problems as with using IRC.
Another issue with using tools like slack, hipchat etc.
Yes, I’ll have some time off coming up so I’ll give it a go.

I setup a proof-of-concept a while back to test it:
http://cloudstackdev.slack.com. There currently are around 30 people, mostly
dev from this list.
Anyone with an @apache.org account can sign-up and anyone else could ask me,
Daan, Rohit, Wilder or Funs for an invite (for now). I can imagine we

What if we use the best of both worlds, by using something like [1]?
We obviously need to dive a bit into this and see how well it works. There
might be alternatives. The benefit of such a solution would be that if you
could see messages on IRC in Slack and v.v. that would make them more visible
All,
For me, the most significant issues with IRC is that there is no searchable
history, backlog to catch up when offline, or good mobile clients (yes, mobile
IRC clients exists, but work poorly in my view). While some of these solutions
can be solved by running an IRC proxy such as znc or us

Hi folks,
IRC has been mostly deserted for a while now. But there are still folks hanging
out there with unanswered questions.
I also know of several slack channels on cloudstack.
We need to take a decision here. Shall we officially abandon IRC and out a
notice there that points towards Slack.
