Hi everyone, http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=52449
describes the task of writing a new data source driver for the address book of the K Desktop Environment (KDE). ***A few screenshots and alpha source code are attached to this page.*** KDE is one of the major desktop environment for UNIX platforms. KDE's address book is used in many KDE applications, like KMail (mail reader), KContact (mail reader, agenda, calendar, etc), KPilot (palm pilot synchronization), and of course KAddressBook (address book manager). It can store addresses in many places: local files (VCard format), LDAP server and regular SQL databases, bringing both private and company-wide addresses to the user in a transparent way. Like the similar Evolution or Mozilla address book drivers, this new driver will allow to do mass mailing in Writer, to query the addresses with SQL statements in Base, to write OOBasic macros to loop throught the addresses, etc. For the moment, KDE's address book driver is read-only (no UPDATE nor DELETE statement allowed), but it could become read/write later on, so that one could write forms in OOo to change the addresses too. Currently, the driver does not handle all the SQL syntax, but this is evolving fast. This project is somewhere in between KDE integration (http://kde.openoffice.org) and Database access (http://dba.openoffice.org), so it is not clear yet where it will be located in the OOo projects hierarchy.
