I have seen this happening for other e-mail addresses and on other mailing
lists as well. I may be wrong, but I would suppose it is a deliberate
anti-spam measure.

Is it critical to maintain backward compatibility for the Catalog Thrift
APIs? I'm asking because the privileges in the catalog are tightly tied to
role and I'm looking to add user privileges to the catalog.

Again there's inconsistency with Hive: the presence of a single Avro
partition doesn't change the table-level schema.
The interesting thing is that, when I modified Impala to have a similar
behavior, I got the following error from the backend when trying to query
the data:
