I have been using Smoothwall for over a year now and had very few problems
(the problems are mainly to do with the hardware)

I assumed that it was because journalid was of type char or varchar instead
of a numeric data type

I am running into a problem with a query that is looking at a list to get

Any firewall will protect any version of SQL server so it is not
relevent. A firewall basically blocks ports and IP addresses and the
