Is it really worth bothering? I see no positive aspects, apart from
saving some bytes of space and a few words in the pom and/or assembly
descriptors. OTOH, you'd make us depending on the presence of a
"modern zip implementation", which Unix distributions tend to have

Modern zip implementations seem to handle perms and such fine, how
about we just distribute a zip?
