I just ran into the same problem with t:validateEmail.
I was able to solve it by using t:inputText instead of h:inputText.
 
Example:
    <t:inputText id="xxx" value="" required="true">
      <t:validateEmail />
    </t:inputText>
    <t:message for="xxx" />

I am using tomahawk 1.1.6 with myfaces 1.2.2.
