Make sure it’s a data cable and not just a power cable, some cheap USB cable
are missing the data lines.

All,
I submitted a pull request for a basic SPI API.I chose the simplest API I
could in order to get functionality to build upon with the thinking that we
can add APIs in the future without breaking compatibility.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the problem over here. I was able to
load the arduino boot loader in Ubuntu 14.10 without any problems.
