I know it's not good to remove all the tabs from our sources now, but there are
tons of tabs checked in in our sources.
The best way to avoid this is by enabling the viewing of whitespace characters
in eclipse or idea. I know that this takes a bit to get used to, but it's
really worth it.

Agreed. Probably a best practice to remove tabs as you're updating parts
which are using tabs rather than spaces. Also if you use the OpenJPA
Eclipse formatter[1] tabs will be automagically converted to spaces.
