Hello,

I'm no developer, so please bear with me for my rather complicated description. ;-)

As some of you may know, I'm involved in OpenOffice.org network setups with a centralized configuration. I've already published various articles on that and also contributed to the network configuration PDF on our website. During writing an article for German c't magazine on that topic (published in c't 18/2009), I came across a bug:

Although specific settings in the configuration can be locked with the oor:finalized=true attribute in the XCU file, it doesn't work reliably all of the time. Normally, when a configuration element has been locked, it is grayed out, has a little key icon next to it and manual changes by the user are ignored. While the latter one works in all cases, the visualization of the locking doesn't work for all settings.

One example is the proxy configuration: You can perfectly lock it in Inet.xcu, but the dialog does not reflect this change. Users can happily modify the settings, nothing is grayed out. However, user's changed are ignored and upon opening the dialog box a second time, the preconfigured values show up again. This isn't only true for the proxy configuration, but for many more settings.

So, the basic functionality works, but the visualization in the UI is not always working as expected, which can confuse users.

After discussing with Carsten Driesner from Sun, he suggested to ask on this list if someone is interested in helping to fix this. I am no developer, so I can only help in testing, but Carsten offered some instructions and guidance if someone is interested.

Although I agree that we have many more critical bugs to fix than this one, I consider it important for corporate deployments. And as corporate deployments are an important market, I hope for help ;-)

Florian
