I'm one of the technical admins on wikivoyage.org. Wikivoyage is a
non-profit open-content project with the goal to produce a world wide
travel guide. So far, only in German and Italian. We still have a lack
of suitable maps.
Let me describe my ideas in short:

I am trying to find a way of obtaining OSM data (read only) for use in an
application for providing additional information on top of a pre-rendered
map (e.g. display of locations of pubs, shops etc. as selected by the user).
There seem to be quite a few ways to do this:
