how do I check out svn for a certain date?

I've read: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.0/svn-book.html#svn-ch-9-sect-1.2-re-checkout http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.0/svn-book.html#svn-ch-3-sect-3.3 and I've tried all kind of variations of the checkout command, but it keeps giving me the latest svn rather than from the date I ask it for.
