there is now a patch in st which implements BCE (Back Color Erase). I
hope I did it right. Due to this being a historical hack st is now using
to be more compatible to legacy applications is there a good chance some
behaviour is not right.

What is your defaultbg? Is it black? If not, try setting your "black" to
