Solution: use mutt.
In ~/.muttrc:
alternative_order text/plain
auto_view text/html
set mailcap_path=~/.mailcap
And in ~/.mailcap:
text/html; w3m -I %{charset} -T text/html; copiousoutput;
w3m is required for the html->text translation.
