Thanks,

With JDK 5, it is impossible (clear way) to reading passwords without
echoing their text (With JDK 1.6, it can be). JLine provide this. I
need to add an option for getting password for root level secret
repository (SYNAPSE-376) based on JLine. Minimally, it (Jline binary)

Indika,
So we will need to distribute this library if we uses this with synapse, in
which case I *think* we cannot use it in apache :(

As I know BSD licenses are OK to be used with Apache projects,.. Paul,
Sanjiva or Ant etc may know better.. I would like to keep the JDK 1.5
support so I am ok to this if the license is compatible..

You can use this library - BSD is fine with Apache. However, I am
still not convinced by the idea of requiring command-line input from
the user at runtime. I can't imagine any production system that
requires an admin to be there to type passwords in when the system is
rebooted.

Yes it is. Command line will not be used at many times. As discus in
SYNAPSE-376 , I expect to add JMX based, cmd , one time password file
and other valuable suggestions from Eric too. This is just an option,

I am +1 for this proposal.. also maybe the mandatory sequence could be used
to handle security for this case, which is a valid point as highlighted.
Does this mean that the user will be responsible to set up the
sequence and restrict access?

Ruwan,
There is obviously some overlap between the proposed mechanism and
proxy services. I would be interested in getting an overview of the
differences between the two solutions and the respective advantages
and disadvantages of them (a sort of decision guide when to use which
one). Could you
