WRT the design, I do not know all of the other use cases. I expect that this
decision was arrived at to simplify complexity, or other reasonable reasons.

The mime extension is not working on a case insensitive basis. Now my
Tomcat 5.5 does byte serving with the web.xml portion below:

I don't see how it would be readable. The formatting is inconsistent, it
would likely have no links, etc.
