If you cannot go from 3.x -> 4.1 (I'll concede a few gotchas) then 4.1
shouldn't be a minor release.
As others have stated though, it should work.

We squashed the DB migrations in the 4.0 release, so you would need to
at least run the DB migrations for 3.0/3.1 (pretty sure both had the
exact same migrations) before upgrading to 4.0 or 4.1. So, I don't
think there is anything precluding someone from upgrading from 3.x
directly to 4.1.

I couldn't say for sure but I do think you need to be on the latest 3.x to
get to 4.x, fyi.
