IMHO a great idea would be to abstract metrics using the Apache BookKeeper
"stats" library

This in turn has implementations for Codahale (JMX...) and Prometheus. The
binding for Prometheus can be attached to the existing Jetty based admin
service (it exposes an HttpServlet).
