The current version of the checkstyle plugin we use (2.9.1) is using Checkstyle 5.5, which has a pair of annoying bugs (see release notes of 5.6 - http://checkstyle.sourceforge.net/releasenotes.html)
Unfortunately, upgrading

the latest plugin (2.12.1) doesn't seem

We could get away with just updating the dependency to the newer checkstyle

but if we're re-releasing
this will mean

parent poms, we could update the plugin and our config too.
