I went and downloaded the bundle that included tomcat and the MagnoliaAuthor
& MagnoliaPublic webapps. That solved the problem I had with activation.

thanks for the reply. I am running on a mac (snow lep). I already have
tomcat installed and I'm launching it from MyEclipse. That being the case I
have been using the war files. None of the wars I tried had webapps
MagnoliaAuthor or MagnoliaPublic. Although I was able to use Admin

Means there is nothing listening on that url, which most likely means you do
not have public instance setup
