Even though RH abandoned the Sparc chip after RH6.2 the Sparclinux project is still alvie and well.
Visit http://www.ultralinux.org I haven't played with it for a while, but in a former job I had used it on Sparc 5 workstations and Ultra II servers. (OK I'll tell the truth, I played with it, it wan't _really_ part of my job :) But I did use it as one of my desktops for a year or so). Off the top of my head, about the only thing I can think of that will definitely bite you wrt the Sparc arch is the differences between lilo and silo. Of course I've been wrong before :) You'll need to compile all the ix86 programs for sparc, but the SRPMS should be available so they should compile OK. You may have issues with kernel modules - especially some of the ones we had to patch. Similarly the installer is almost certainly ix86 specific - not fomr the sense of it being a binary, rather that the assumptions it makes about the target system won't necessarily be valid for Sparc. Good luck. -- Regards Peter ---------- Peter Samuel, Senior Systems Administrator [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.e-smith.org (development) http://www.mitel.com (corporate) Phone: +1 613 592 2122 Fax: +1 613 592 1175 Mitel Networks, 350 Legget Dr, Ottawa, ON K2K 2W7 Canada "If you kill all your unhappy customers, you'll only have happy ones left" -- Please report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] (only) to discuss security issues Support for registered customers and partners to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Searchable archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/devinfo%40lists.e-smith.org
