The StatPlanet application is evolving, with version 2.3 in the works.
It is not open source, but can easily be configured and the data
editor is a GPL3-licensed Excel application for converting data into
the StatPlanet format. It may give us some inspiration for
creating a generic tool for import of data from CSV or spreadsheets:

We could also take some inspiration for output. UNDP Human Development
Report released with StatPlanet maps:
