The area within the page borders represents the printed area inside the
margins. INother words you do not see the unprinted white space when
looking at Dia. Also, since the margins themselves are variable there is
further confusion.

1. From the menu in the Diagram window, select File -> Page Setup,
this will open a "Page Setup" dialog.
2. In the "Scaling" box, select "Fit to:" and "1" by "1"

I do not understand the size of the canvas in relation to how it will appear

What are the borders? Is it simply the 21 x 29.7 for a4 for example and i have
to simply stay within those ruler lines?

I have been trying to insert a text object in a drawing. The toolbox
says I can press ALT+T to get a text object. The menu bar says
SHIFT+ALT+T. Neither combination works.
The only time it worked was when I went into preferences and delected
"Use menu bar" and then I could use SHIFT+ALT+T to g
