CTCNet Chicago honored three regional eChampions and one exemplar of the
grassroots leadership so important to our field, on Thursday October 20 at
Digital Neighborhoods 2005.

We proudly recognize the work of our 2005 eChampions: persons and
institutions that have stood beside us from the beginning and positively
impacted our field.

Civic eChampion: Illinois State Representative Constance A. Howard

Representative Howard is tremendously respected across Illinois for her
legislative leadership in efforts to eliminate the digital and has always
been our staunchest ally and friend. “Connie” Howard recognizes the myriad
barriers faced by our communities and has a deep understanding of how
technology brings opportunity and empowerment when applied with thought. Her
commitment to connecting every household in the information age is matched
only by her passion for protecting the rights and improving the prospects of
those passing through the justice system. Representative Howard has served
the 34th District since January 11, 1995. She is in her sixth term.

Media eChampion: Bruce Eric Montgomery & Technology Access TV

Bruce has given Chicago more than six years of intelligent and entertaining
commentary on both community and technology as Producer and Host of
Technology Access TV, Chicago’s weekly technology TV show. Bruce is the
Director of Chicago Initiatives for Simdesk Technologies, Inc., Executive
Vice President of BDPA Chicago Chapter, and a Founding Board Member of
CTCNet Chicago.

Philanthropic eChampion: The Polk Bros. Foundation

Providers of digital literacy training and access rely upon the generosity
of the entire community. Without the philanthropic leadership of the Polk
Bros. Foundation, our neighborhoods would not have the strength and vibrancy
that they do and Community Technology would not have as secure a basis as we
enjoy in Chicago. Nikki Will Stein, Executive Director of the Polk Bros.
Foundation, accepts on behalf of the Foundation.

Grassroots Leadership: Douglas L. Thompson

We honor Mr. Douglas Lee Thompson, founder and executive director of the New
Galilee Outreach, Advocacy & Technology Center as a pillar of the community
with our first grassroots leadership award.

Mr. Thompson represents the heart of our movement: this is not about the
technology. It’s about helping people to change their lives and their
communities for the better. This is community organizing and development,
pure and simple.

We thank the sponsors and other supporters without whom this event would not
have been possible.
