You can use Ubuntu from the install CD. It will let you run that way for testing. There is no time limit for testing and most of the supplied apps, drivers, and networking work fime from the CD. I don't' know if you can use a Thumbdrive to boot Ubuntu from on your laptop (some don't) so just load the ISO image to your thumbdrive and try it.
